Zcash (ZEC) is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency launched in 2016 as a fork of Bitcoin's codebase. Its defining feature is the use of zero-knowledge proofs (zk-SNARKs) to support shielded transactions in which the sender, receiver and amount are encrypted on-chain. Transparent addresses also exist, so ZEC can be used like Bitcoin when privacy isn't needed. Supply is capped at 21 million coins on the same halving schedule as Bitcoin. Because of its privacy guarantees, several exchanges and jurisdictions have delisted or restricted ZEC — verify local availability before trading.
